Anyone who knows me knows I caught the travel bug when I moved to Germany. Ever since moving here traveling is all I ever want to do so I try to incorporate it into my life as much as possible.
Traveling (for me) is a stress reliever. I love going to a new city, exploring, trying new foods and just enjoying my time with Stefan.
With us being so close to so many amazing countries, we get the opportunity to drive more instead of flying (also because I have awful flight anxiety). That gives us a chance to see more things along the way. But that also means we tend to overpack on road trips.
When we fly, we also tend to overpack as well. Although, Stefan and I usually just end up sharing one big suitcase (checked luggage) and then we each have our personal bag and a carry-on. Also, when we end up driving more places, I always bring way more stuff than necessary. I guess my brain is thinking “hey there’s more room for stuff, bring more!” But this year when we travel ANYWHERE I want to try to travel as light as possible and stick with just my carry on bag.
It is definitely going to be difficult at first but in the end, I know I will be happy not having to carry so much stuff with me all the time. I also won’t have to worry about if the airline lost my luggage, if it’s damaged if there are things missing from my bag, and I get to save money!
Now let’s get into some packing tips for your carry-on!
Let’s Start Packing Your Carry-on!
Let’s say you are going on a 5 day trip in warm/hot weather. You will already be packing lighter clothes already since your destination is going to be warm. I know when I am going somewhere hot I will definitely be wearing dresses and shorts.
For 5 days you can bring:
-2 pairs of shorts
Just those 5 items alone can create about 6 outfits!
-1 pair of jeans
-2 pair of leggings (1 for the flight there and back/working out)
-1 set of pajamas
I will also bring my camera in my carry-on bag as well.
Rolling your clothes will help create more space in your suitcase and will make it easier to find your clothes. I don’t like to use my packing cubes in my carry-on as I feel they take up a bit too much space in my small suitcase.
As for your bathroom bag, pack your normal items (makeup, hairspray, skin products, etc.) but REMEMBER you can only bring 100ml (3oz) of liquid per item in your carry-on.
I also like to pack my liquids in a clear bag that I can easily take out and it makes it easier for TSA to see what you are bringing.
What to Bring in Your Personal Bag?
This is going to be a list of every single thing that I bring in my personal bag every time I go on ANY trip.
-Health Insurance card/information
-iPad and headphones (I use this to listen to podcasts or to watch something on a short flight)
-Reusable water bottle
-Chargers (for electronics)
-Spare phone battery
-My favorite tea (I only drink peppermint tea so I am very picky about which kind I drink. Plus, you can get hot water from most cafes in the airport so you can make your own tea before you get on the plane)
The Best Outfit to Wear on the Plane/in the Car
Dressing comfortably for a flight is so important. Don’t wear heels to the airport if you know your feet will start hurting after 1 hour of walking around. Plus, no one wants to see your bare feet when you take them off in the plane.
I also think of comfort first. I don’t want to go to the airport look raggy but I also want to be relaxed. The same with driving in a car for 7 hours, I want to just be comfortable the whole time.
Also, layering on a plane is always a good idea because it usually gets a bit cold in there (depending on the flight). While driving, I usually stick to 1/2 layers because there is controlled heating/AC.
Here is what I recommend to wear on a travel day!
-a pair of comfortable leggings (I usually wear a pair of my workout leggings)
-T-shirt/tank top and comfortable bra (usually a sports bra)
-Sweater/sweatshirt (I love to wear an oversized neutral sweatshirt that way it can match with any other outfit from your carry-on)
-Comfortable shoes (usually tennis/sports shoes because they’re comfy but also easy to take on and off when going through security)
Other Carry-on Packing Tips
(for any time of year)
-Wear your heaviest clothes
If you are traveling somewhere during winter, wear your winter boots and heavy coat. That way it doesn’t take up space and weight in your carry-on if it would even fit in there. Plus, it will help keep you warm and comfortable on the plane.
-Don’t bring multiples if you don’t need to
Sorry but you’re not going to need 4 different pairs of shoes for a 7-day trip! It’s unnecessary and it will just be wasting space you could be using for something else more important. You also don’t need 10 shirts and 5 pairs of jeans for a short trip. You can always wash clothes at your destination if need be.
-Plan your outfits ahead of time
Planning your outfits before your trip will help you save time, space and weight in your carry-on! Plus, doing this especially as a blogger, is so helpful to make sure I am getting all the photos I need to get done.
-Invest in travel size makeup, skin products, and hair products
Investing in these items will make traveling a lot easier for you. You can also buy reusable bottles that you can re-fill for every trip so you can bring all of your favorite products with you.
-Make sure you get a good carry-on and personal bag
Just because it’s cute doesn’t mean it is practical and will fit properly on a plane. Do your research, compare, and make sure it is in line with airplane regulations.
Travel is supposed to always be fun and relaxing. So why stress about your luggage? Bringing a carry-on will end up being the easiest way to travel more often and it will save you money as well. Of course, for some trips, you won’t always be able to just travel with a small suitcase but I guarantee when you DO start traveling with just a carry-on suitcase, your trips will become less stressful!
